Darwin lived at Down House for 40 years until his death in 1882. He remodelled the house to create an outdoor laboratory where he not only developed his theory of evolution and wrote his famous book, but also proved that plants move. The house is much as Darwin left it, with an enormous collection of scientific and personal artefacts, including his notebooks from his voyage on the Beagle.  Opington from Charing Cross then a, 3 minute walk
