Dr Thomas Barnado came to London in 1866 to study medicine but discovered a city plagued with problems, especially the number of orphaned and uneducated children. In 1867 he opened the first of many, Ragged Schools and by 1908 tens of thousands of children had received a free education. If you want a real taste of a Victorian schoolchild’s education you really cannot do any better than this.
